BOTOX®
(botulinum toxin type A) is an injectable treatment used to treat
moderate to severe frown lines and crow’s feet. Made from a toxin
produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, in small, diluted
amounts this toxin can be directly injected into specific facial
muscle. The Botox injection works by blocking signals from the
nerves to the muscles, reducing the contractions of the muscles that
cause frown lines. This results in the relaxing and softening of the
wrinkles.
The entire BOTOX® Cosmetic injection procedure
takes approximately 10 minutes. Although no anesthesia is necessary,
the doctor may apply a cold pack to the injection site to minimize
discomfort. A very fine needle is used to inject Botox into specific
muscles. The treatment requires no downtime. Results of the Botox
treatment can be seen within 3 to 7 days. Common side effects
following injection may include temporary bruising, tenderness,
minor inflammation, and redness. In rare instances, some patients
may experience headache or temporary eyelid drooping. These side
effects resolve themselves within a week or so. Results of the Botox
treatment are evident within 3 to 7 days.
